Documents required for a VAD

Upload copies of these documents online during the application, and bring the originals to Switzerland in person.

Documents required for anyone, regardless of marital status below:

  • Passport (or ID used to cross the border into Switzerland). Please make sure you uploaded or e-mailed a scan or good photo thereof and bring the original to the VAD.

  • Proof of residence (Rates notice, utilities bill, etc.)

  • Your long-form birth certificate (with parents’ full names, usually obtained from a government Registry Office)

    • Must be re-issued in the last 6 months prior to your VAD date
    • Must be in English, German, French or translated to one of these languages

ADDITIONAL MUST-HAVE documents, based on marital status below:

  • If married:

    Documents below must be in English, German, French or translated to one of these languages and must be  re-issued in the last 6 months prior to your VAD date

    • Marriage certificate (usually obtained from a government Registry Office)
    • Spouse’s birth certificate (Long form with parent’s names on it)

    Scan of spouse’s passport (or ID card) is also required

  • If widowed:

    • Death certificate of your spouse (a copy is sufficient)
  • If divorced:

    • Divorce certificate (a copy is sufficient)

  • If single:

    • Statutory Declaration (Signed and dated within 6 months prior to your VAD)

      The declaration must have the exact wording: “I solemnly declare that I am single and have never been married.

      This declaration must contain your full name, together with the full names of your parents, your date of birth and current residential address.
